The International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) has officially endorsed Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
IUPA President Sam Cabral praised the former president’s support for law enforcement in a Feb. 6 press release, touting how Trump “has earned and deserves our wholehearted support.” He continued: “Trump’s history of support for the men and women of law enforcement is unmatched. His policies and actions were directed at improving safety in our communities and the men and women who provide that shield.”
The organization chartered in 1979 took a firm stance against certain aspects of Democratic policies. Cabral accused the Democrats of supporting initiatives such as defunding the police, advocating for sanctuary cities and open borders and reducing accountability for criminal behavior.
These measures, he added, have had “tragic” consequences for communities in the form of business closures and increased criminal activity. Moreover, the head of the police union also disclosed the alarming rate at which police departments are losing officers – leading to a diminished law enforcement presence.
“Roving gangs are terrorizing retail businesses, raiding them with absolute impunity akin to a thousand-year-old past – regressive rather than their own progressive ideology,” wrote Cabral. “They have not dealt with the consequences of their own failed strategies, while we have all suffered.”
“We firmly believe that Trump can and will address these issues effectively, while reinstating the confidence of a safe and prosperous United States of America. Trump has reminded the world of the greatness of this country, [and] he is the right person to continue to Make America Even Greater.”
This was not the first time the IUPA threw its support behind Trump – it previously did so in 2020. Aside from the IUPA, two other police unions – the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) – also expressed support at the time.
The FOP, the largest police union in the U.S., praised Trump in 2020 for “showing time after time that he supports our law enforcement officers.” It also proudly endorsed him as a candidate advocating for law and order nationwide. “During his first four years, Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” said FOP President Patrick Yoes.
The NAPO, a coalition comprising police unions and associations across the country, issued a similar endorsement for Trump in 2020. The group acknowledged his “steadfast and very public support for our men and women on the front lines” amid the protests and riots after the death of George Floyd in police custody.
The 2020 endorsement by both the FOP and NAPO came at a critical time when law enforcement faced heightened scrutiny, with calls for police reform and de-funding echoing across the nation. With the IUPA’s endorsement, Trump’s supporters have raised their expectations for the two other police unions’ endorsement. According to Breitbart News, the IUPA’s endorsement follows a survey done by TIPP Insights showing that crime is a top issue for the American electorate. The said survey polled 1,402 American respondents from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 of this year.
Of the 20 different issues mentioned by the respondents, three stood out – the economy (38 percent), immigration and border security (36 percent) and crime (19 percent). Trump, who has been a vocal supporter of law enforcement, has consistently denounced the “anti-cop crusade” that is happening in several parts of the United States.
